How do I help my child prepare for a careers fair at school?

One common challenge many students face at careers fairs is feeling overwhelmed or unsure about how to navigate the event effectively. It’s not uncommon to see groups of students sticking together, hesitating to approach exhibitors, or simply not engaging with the employers and professionals present.

However, we believe that with proper preparation and guidance, your child can overcome these challenges and make the most of this valuable opportunity for career exploration and networking. Many careers fairs are held in the evening, and we strongly encourage parents to attend with their children. By taking the time to talk to your child in advance and help them prepare, they can approach the careers fair with confidence, enthusiasm, and a clear sense of purpose.

Follow Up at Home

Ask your child questions about the careers fair and what they discovered. If they took notes or picked up leaflets or business cards, ask them to show you and tell you more.

Following up is something that not many students do and will certainly set your child apart from the rest if they do this effectively. Sending a thank-you email to exhibitors or professionals they spoke with and showing interest in their industry is really valuable. It may be that on the back of this they are offered an interview for an apprenticeship or even some work experience.

Following organisations or professionals on social media platforms like LinkedIn to stay updated on industry news and job opportunities is also a good idea. Reaching out to professionals for informal interviews or mentorship opportunities to gain further guidance and advice.
